resumeI found a job! I'm now working at Beatnik, a company that does music synthesis for cellphones. For the curious, I still have a resume (PDF here). I still have some smart friends who are unemployed, so feel free to keep sending job leads my way: raphael@pobox.com .
PocketMail I used to work for PocketScience. PocketMail is a ridiculously cheap and easy way to get your email on the go. It's a small handheld device with a built-in acoustic modem; just hold it up to any phone phone and press the button.
Newton MP2k I'm the author of NewtPaint, a paint program for the Newton MessagePad. You can still get info about this program from LandWare, Inc, my publisher.
Apple logo For a couple of years I was President of the Stanford/Palo Alto Macintosh User's Group (SMUG). I founded the Stanford Newton User's Group (SNUG) in 1994, which has since spawned a Stanford Pilot User's Group (SPUG)
music score In my spare time I like to play guitar, piano, and various other instruments. Here's a sample. (.aiff soundfile, 390k)

A few books I can't recommend strongly enough:

Software:
Object-Oriented Software Construction by Bertrand Meyer
"Real systems have no top."
"Do not pretend you know the user; you don't."
Psychology:
Punished By Rewards: The Trouble With Gold Stars, Incentive Plans, A's, Praise, and Other Bribes
by Alfie Kohn
"The point to be emphasized is that all rewards, by virtue of being rewards, are not attempts to influence or persuade or solve problems together, but simply to control."
Science Fiction:
Snow Crash by Neil Stephenson
"There's only four things [Americans] do better than anyone else: music, movies, microcode (software), high-speed pizza delivery."
"Their eyes meet and her heart starts flopping around weakly, like a bunny in a Ziplock bag."
Economics:
Fair Play: What Your Child Can Teach You About Economics, Values and the Meaning of Life by Steven Landsburg
Politics:
The Machinery of Freedom: Guide to a Radical Capitalism by David Friedman
"The direct use of physical force is so poor a solution to the problem of limited resources that it is commonly employed only by small children and great nations."
Education:
Separating School and State: How to Liberate America's Families by Sheldon Richman

The government that seems the most unwise, oft goodness to the people best supplies. That which is meddling, touching everything, will work but ill, and disappointment bring. - The Tao Te Ching
